Guest Post {6 Five Minute Ways to Spark Creativity}

Y'all I am so excited to introduce you to my dear friend, Lisa! We spent many countless nights of High School together and now are catching back up with each other through bloggy land. Not only are blogs great for meeting new people but also for keeping you up on old friends. Love it. She is a wonderful woman who inspires me to think outside the box and use what I have to make fabulous things. Her husband, who is loving referred to as Ceej, is an art teacher and the two of them together are one dynamite source of creativity!

I guest posted there last week and now Lisa is taking over my blog! Her tips are wonderful, I have even tried a few of them out myself and feel the creative juices flowing...watch out hobby lobby :)  I love Lisa and her blog. Not only was her 30 day hair post inspiring but so are her post on crayola colors and desserts and so much more. You guys have got to check it out and gain some creativity from her.

I want to start by saying thanks to Kelley for inviting me over for a guest post! I love following Kelley’s creativity on Daily-Sips. I’m always so impressed by the ways she uses her gifts, time, and energy to serve her family and create a beautiful life.  Kelley’s passion for joyful homemaking is irresistible and a great example to me!

My name is Lisa, and I run a blog call Making Home Homemade about living creatively as an adult. I am a design and marketing manager and freelance graphic designer. All in all, my job and life are constantly requiring creativity!

Creativity is a gift but also a kind of muscle. Creativity, no matter how much you think you do or don’t have, can be developed, tuned, or even over-taxed! Sometimes failed attempts, exhaustion, or pressure can really stifle the creative muscle, and deposit you in a sort of rut. Whether you are a mom, an artist, or an engineer, a creative rut is frustrating.

This list is six simple things that I’ve used to shake me out of mild creative funks. Sometimes it’s just about distracting my mind from the current constraints and pressures, giving my brain the brief respite it needs, rebooting. Sometimes 5 minutes is all it takes!

Listen to new music. Find something upbeat and encouraging. Some of my favorites are Andy Grammer, Eric Hutchinson, Fiest, The Rocket Summer. Set up a Pandora channel for your favorite band and find similar artists.
Get physical. Challenge yourself to 50 sit-ups. Stretch your legs and arms, or try my personal favorite, get up and dance to a great song!
Learn something new. Google or Pinterest something interesting. Pick your favorite color and see what images pop up. Read about a foreign culture. Look at a Popular Science magazine.
     Change clothes. Put on something that makes you feel spicy, accomplished, fresh. This should bring a boost of motivation. My sister writes school papers in heels because it gives her a sense of style and capability.

    Make a spider chart. My college sketch books were filled with these. This site has pretty good instructions, but for creative brainstorming, be as freeform as you can possibly manage. Write down every idea for every spider branch. Spider charts are my favorite way to come up with unique associations and new ideas.
   Reminisce/Daydream. Completely drop whatever you are trying to accomplish…just for 5 minutes! Close your eyes, lean back, and relive your favorite memories, or dream about your best future. Because this is all in your head, you can be as honest and absurd as you want. Let you brain dote on something positive that is totally personal and without pressure. Sometimes this is just enough to kick-start and refresh my brain.

Hopefully one or two of these can work for you too! Adults and creativity are just as compatible as children and creativity, but as adults we have more distractions. Sometimes we have to work a little harder! I’d love to know about how you inspire yourself. What is your strategy for creativity?

Hit my up at makinghomehomemade@gmail.com or on my blog! Thanks so much for reading!
