I got my first one a few years back while working for Starbucks. As I was doing a deep clean of my store I came across an old coffee sack and immediately knew I needed it. It sat in a pile of craft ideas for years. I just couldn't decide exactly what to do with it.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago when all our leather dining room chairs split down the middle and boom it hit me. Refinish our chairs with coffee sacks! So I hit the local coffee shop and snagged up a few more and got to work. We love it!
I also grabbed an extra sack to use as a window valance in our kitchen.
I didnt take step by step pictures of the project but it is quite easy to do.
Steps:
{1} remove cushions from chairs
{2} measure width of chair and cut fabric to wrap around cushion. (We used a heavy beige linen for this)
{3} staple fabric to back of cushions.
{4} cut burlap coffee sacks in half lengthwise.
{5} wrap coffee sacks around chairs and staple them to the bottom of the cushion.
{6} place cushions back on chairs and admire your work.
The only negative is you can't waterproof the cushions. So if you have kids, like us, you will have to put a towel over their chairs to catch all the crumbs and liquids they drop at each meal. But we figure at $3 a covering we could redo them yearly if they get too beat up.
Crazy thing is I walked in anthropologie this weekend and they had a chairs refinished in burlap coffee sacks too! Thanks for making me feel hip anthropologie :)
